A boss is a significant, difficult computer-controlled opponent that often must be battled in its own arena to progress in the game. Bosses have appeared in all released Newer Super Mario Bros. games thus far.

Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii

The bosses of Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii appear at the ends of towers, castles, and airships. With the exception of World 8, Koopa Planet and Koopa Core, the tower and castle boss is always the same within a world, and has a custom-programmed boss battle. The airship bosses are the Koopalings.

Goldwood Forest, Mini-Mega Island, Sky City, Crystal Caves, Bombard Cliffs, and Bonus Land do not have any bosses.

Newer Super Mario Bros. DS

In Newer Super Mario Bros. DS, bosses are fought at the ends of towers and castles. The bosses themselves appear to be identical to those in the retail game, but in different places.

Newer Super Mario Bros. U

No bosses have yet been revealed for Newer Super Mario Bros. U.

Trivia

  • Bowser Jr. was going to have a role in the story of Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii, and thus could have been a boss earlier in development. He was presumably cut because it was thought that the character was not well-liked.
